My favourite way to read books is by listening to audio books. I know it’s not really reading but still counts as one form of education. It makes it super convenient to feed your brain information and inspiration on the go. I am always on my feet doing something, so it does help to be able to listen wherever and whenever I want to. It gives you the freedom to read a book while you’re cooking, doing the dishes, working out, driving to work, etc!
Audible charges a small monthly fee every month ($15) and applies credits to use towards your next purchases. The subscription gives you large discount off books and access to over 180,000 books.
Ok now on to my favorite audio books for 2017, I have read over 20 audio books in 2017 most of which have to do with nutrition, business startups, and motivational books. In no particular order, here are my top picks; let’s start with my favourite books about health & nutrition :
- How not to die By Michael Greger MD, Gene StoneIt examines the 15 top causes of death in America. It presents scientific evidence showing how diet could reverse many of these diseases. Dr.Gregor narrates the book himself with an enticing voice that will keep you coming for more. He has a Youtube channel under the name NutritionFacts. The book is super educational and helpful for anyone who is looking to clean up their diet, cure chronic diseases, or know anyone with a life threatening disease. It truly affected the way I live and eat. I highly recommend it!
- The starch solution By John McDougall, Mary McDougallAnother book about nutrition and health. Dr. John McDougall is a clinical practitioner who first discovered the correlation between diet, disease and health while practicing family medicine in Hawaii. The book debunks some of the misconceptions we have about starches and carbs and how our bodies are designed to thrive on carbs rather than proteins and fats. Dr. McDougall helped many patients lose weight and conquer life threatening diseases with a whole foods plant based diet. His style of research differs from Dr. Gregor’s and for that reason I found both books very entreating yet educational in so many ways. Give it a listen, you wont regret it.
- Proteinaholic By Garth Davis MDOne of my favorite health and nutrition books is Proteinaholic by Dr. Davis. Dr. Davis is a weight loss surgeon who was obsessed with protein consumption and recommended a high protein diet to all his patients. Sadly, that diet didn’t reap good results. If you are concerned about protein, you need to give this book a listen. He brings up many good studies and explains how animal protein is truly killing us. This book will help you lower your chance of illness and widen your understanding of how to read different studies and which ones are valid and which ones are funded or sponsored. Dr. Davis addresses the myths behind Paleo and Atkins diet. He sheds a light on what people who live in the blue zone eat everyday. It’s a must read! One of the best diet review books on the market.
- The 5 Second Rule By Mel RobbinsIf you need some motivation to change or adopt new habits, this one is for you. Mel Robbins narrates the book in the most enticing way possible, she makes you feel like you’re listening to a radio podcast or as if she’s talking directly to you in your living room. The book makes you realize that the only thing standing in your way is you. She reveals the tool that helped her personally overcome procrastination and depression. Honestly, it’s all in your head. We have the power to switch anything on or off but we need to understand how our brain functions. I have used the 5 second rule and I can tell you from experience that it does work. The idea sounds like full on B.S and that it would never work in a million years but just try it. If you are the type of person who is putting something off that will improve your life, this is the book for you and even if you are not, just read the book, it’s freaking hilarious.
- Rework By Jason Fried, David Heinemeier Hansson
This one is for those who are thinking to start a business of some sort. It talks about the different methods of pursuing a successful business without losing your mind. You don’t have to be a workaholic to run a business. This book is not your average “How To” book. The author brings on good points about outside competition and how to market your business on a budget. He believes in sticking to the basics and not dwelling too much on fancy extrinsic details, and keeping it simple.
6. Big Magic: Creative living beyond fear by Elizabeth Gilbert
All I have to say is you gotta read this book. It was a last minute read for me and I really kick myself for not reading it earlier on this year. One of the most well articulated books out there. Elizabeth is an award-winning writer and she sure knows how to leave an impact on her readers. This book offers deep insights into creativity, fear, and ideas. I can’t give away more than that, it’s a fast read so don’t hesitate to pick it up. It’s a must read for all you inspiring creatives.
7. The success Principles By Janet Switzer, Jack Canfield
My older sister who just started her career in medicine recommended this book for me. Honestly, the first few chapters of the book seemed like they are full of B.S and straight up bragging. But as I continued to listen, I couldn’t stop. This book was the reason I created all my vision boards and diffused so much encouragement and inspiration in me. It doesn’t matter how old you are, this book will leave an impact on how you see yourself and other people. This book helps put your goals and dreams into perspective. My one regret is that I didn’t read it sooner. Thanks sis!
8. The Alchemist By Paulo Coelho
While reading the 5 Second Rule book , Mel Robbins (the author) mentioned this book multiple times. I decided to download it and give it a go. With all honesty, at first I found it boring and tedious and couldn’t follow thru but only to realize it’s an amazing piece of read. The Alchemist is written in the most storytelling way. It sparks your imagination with all sorts of characters and events. The message behind the story is beyond motivating. It makes you want to go out and chase all your dreams because you are unstoppable. The young boy in the story traveled the deserts looking for the treasure but it was never about finding the treasure, it’s about determination, persistence and courage. It’s a timeless tale with such a deep meaning.
The message of all these books above have resonated with me and inspired me in some sort of way and I hope it does the same to you too.
Be inspired,
MM
