Positano – Italy

Positano – Italy

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard bloggers rave about this coastal paradise. The village is built on a cliff-side overlooking black pebble beachfronts. Narrow streets with cafes and mini shops spread out everywhere in this little town.

Hello Positano!

The view from this street was incredible. An overcast day that turned into a nice warm sunny day.

We had to wait for the crowds to go away to take this picture. It was crazy packed.

I do think it’s overhyped. Everything was way more EXPENSIVE and a lot harder to get to. Taxis charge anywhere from 90-200 Euros depending on your destination. You can take the bus but we had luggage with us. The waiting time for the bus was over an hour. We took a taxi to Praiano where we stayed our entire stay, which is about 25-35 mins by car from Positano.

Nice little cafes & shops

When you reach Positano, you will be in this overly crowded shopping district, I thought there would be more to see once you get there, but I was wrong. You can go for a walk around pondering the views of the Amalfi coast and stop for a bite somewhere. Food is definitely overpriced in the main shopping area. They have few vegan options but not a whole lot.

We arrived by ferry from Capri to Positano, which is about an hour ride. Once you get off the ferry with your luggage, you will be bombarded by a group of Italians asking you if you want them to bring your luggage for you to the bus stop or to the taxi stand upstairs in the center town. Our second option was to drag our own luggage several hundreds steps up.

The guys seemed legit, they were wearing uniforms and we saw other people leaving their luggage with them so we let them take our luggage considering that they said they would meet us at the bus stand in 10 mins. Oh well, 10 mins have passed and they didn’t show up; we started to worry a bit but they ended up appearing 30 mins later. Do I think they tried to open our bags? Absolutely! The zipper on one of the bags wasn’t fully zipped indicating someone tried to open it. Please be careful in these overly crowded areas.

You will need a whole afternoon browsing thru Positano, so take your time and remember peak hours are from 12-5 pm due to bus schedules. We waited 1 hr in line for the bus, so plan accordingly.

Travel Tip: Positano comes with a lot of stairs and steps to take; therefore traveling light to this specific destination  pays off. People will try to rip you off as this is a huge touristy landmark. Try to negotiate and use Google translator to communicate clearly. Positano is best seen on foot.

I don’t want to sound so negative but I pictured Positano to be more magical in person, like those photos on instagram and on other blogs. However, it was hard to enjoy with all the crowds there; it’s overrun.

Praiano

Positano has a multitude of scenic yet unique landscapes. If you step few minutes outside the main Positano area, you will enjoy some breathtaking views of the Amalfi coast like in Praiano.

Church square in Praiano.

I’ve seen some jaw dropping views on the ride from Naples to Sorrento and from Sorrento to Positano. That road will definitely tickle your imagination. The drive to next town over Praiano left me wanting to see more and more of this majestic mountainous place.

Positano is lit like Christmas
